Tully Filmus’ Use of Charcoal
Tully Filmus, the American realist painter and printmaker (1903–1998), is known for his portraits, religious scenes, and depictions of Jewish community life. While he worked in multiple media, charcoal was indeed one of the materials he used in his artwork.
Charcoal was a common medium for Filmus because it allowed for:
Strong contrasts and deep shadows in portraits and figures.
Expressive, gestural marks that could convey mood and movement.
Versatility in blending with other media to create layered textures. Hasidism and Kabbalah of Rabbi Isaac Luria, which provides the backdrop for the work of Filmus and is appropriately interspersed by his drawings.
