. Vanity Fair - Two Volumes by William Thackeray 1998
Condition: Excellent no signs of wear
Cover: Hardcover no slipcover With hardcover case
"Vanity Fair" is a story of two heroines--one humble, the other scheming and social-climbing--who meet in boarding school and embark on markedly different lives. Amid the swirl of London's posh ballrooms and affairs of love and war, their fortunes rise and fall. Through it all, Thackeray lampoons the shallow values of his society, reserving the most pointed barbs for the upper crust. What results is a prescient look at the dogged pursuit of wealth and status--and the need for humility.
London. Konemann UK Ltd. 1998. Hard Cover. Two pocket size volumes in matching slipcase. Crown 8vo 7½" x 5" [19cm x 12.7cm] approx. Handsome emerald green boards with cream titles to the spine. Volume 1 and front of slipcase shows Rebecca's Farewell. Volume 2 and rear of slipcase shows Mrs Rawden's departure from Paris. Both volumes are in as new condition; the slipcase has no wear except for a mark to the spine panel. Follows the lives of Becky Sharp and Amelia Sedley amid their friends and families during and after the Napoleonic Wars. It was published as a single volume in 1848 with the subtitle 'A Novel without a Hero', reflecting Thackeray's interest in deconstructing his era's conventions regarding literary heroism. It is sometimes considered the "principal founder" of the Victorian domestic novel".
