The Peace Tree from Hiroshima: The Little Bonsai with a Big Story is a book by Sandra Moore and illustrated by Kazumi Wilds. It tells the story of a nearly 400-year-old bonsai tree that witnesses the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945 and the Japanese family that cares for it. The book is recommended for ages 8 and up.
The book is told from the perspective of the tree, Miyajima, and explores themes of resilience, growth, and the importance of gratitude. It also highlights the selflessness of the Yamaki family, who gifted the tree to the United States, and the repaired relationship between the US and Japan that this gesture represents.
The book has won several awards, including the 2015 Gelett Burgess Award for Best Intercultural Book, the 2015 Silver Evergreen Medal for World Peace, and the 2017 Creative Child Magazine Preferred Choice Award.
