The Nightingale: Michael Bedard 1998
Condition: Fine no signs of wear
Cover: Hardcover with slipcover
A retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Nightingale" in which, despite being neglected by the emperor for a jewel-studded bird, the little nightingale revives the dying ruler with its beautiful song
Reviews
Grade 2-4-- A not particularly faithful abridgment of Andersen's story. While Bedard's retelling preserves significant events, it eliminates the artifice of the tale itself, the touches of anthropomorphism, the satiric and the sentimental asides, and makes the character of the nightingale more passive and the serving girl more active. The pictures are detailed, delicate watercolors in a westernized Chinese style. Costumes and settings are extravagant: conventional imperial clutter and color abound (and the jacket notes attest to the authenticity of some motifs). --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle
